Why test pharmacy assistant skills before you hire?
Retail experience and a friendly manner are a good start, but a pharmacy counter is not an ordinary shop counter. A new assistant needs to know which questions they can answer and which must go straight to the pharmacist, how to confirm who is collecting a prescription, and why every label is read in full. Testing those instincts early means your pharmacist spends less time correcting habits learned elsewhere. It also gives you a consistent way to compare applicants from retail, care and hospitality backgrounds, who often have the right attitude but have never worked behind a pharmacy counter.
What this template covers
- Dispensing safety: checking name, medicine, strength and form, and handling look-alike products.
- Handing out prescriptions: confirming the right person with details the customer gives.
- Referral: interactions, red-flag symptoms, possible misuse and altered prescriptions.
- Stock handling: stock rotation and cold-chain items.
- Customer care and confidentiality: delays, complaints and keeping patient information private.
How to run it well
Twelve questions with a 12–15 minute timer gives a fair picture. A pass mark of 70–75% fits most counter and dispensary roles. Shuffle both questions and answer options. If you also want to see potential, set a lower bar for trainees and a higher one for experienced dispensary staff.
The pack is mostly scenarios with one correct response, plus a select-all question on label checks and a true/false on confidentiality. When you review answers, pay attention to the referral questions. Someone who would sell a product to a customer describing chest pain needs a conversation, however good the rest of their score is.
Who this test is for
Use it for counter assistants, dispensary assistants, trainee technicians and delivery staff who handle prescriptions in community, hospital outpatient or online pharmacies. None of the questions involve doses, prices or local rules, so the pack works wherever you hire. It is a screen of judgement and habits, and it sits alongside any training or registration your role legally requires.
Make it yours
Add questions about your own standard operating procedures, the products you sell most often, your pharmacy system or your process for controlled items. The AI generator can draft extra scenarios on topics like returned medicines or awkward customer conversations, which you can edit to match how your team works.
