Why test security guards before you hire?
Security contractors often need to staff a new site at short notice, and most applicants hold the licence or training the job requires. What differs is judgement: how they deal with a tailgater, what goes into an incident report and how they react when they are alone and something looks wrong. A short test lets you compare applicants on the same scenarios before you put them on a client site, where a poor decision reflects on your business. It also helps when a client asks how you select the officers you send, since you can show a consistent, recorded screening step.
What this template covers
- Access control: tailgating and key control.
- Patrols: varying routes, open doors and intruders.
- Conflict management: de-escalating an aggressive visitor.
- Reporting and records: incident reports, handovers and CCTV requests.
- Emergencies: fire evacuation, unattended items and threatening calls.
How to run it well
Use the full twelve questions with a 15-minute limit. A pass mark of about 75% is a fair bar for licensed officers, and you might accept a little lower for trainees if you plan to coach them. Shuffle questions and answers so officers recruited for the same contract cannot share answers.
Most items are realistic scenarios, with a select-all question on handovers and a true/false on patrol routes. Look at the emergency questions in the results separately. Someone who would hang up on a threatening call or move a suspicious bag needs retraining before they are left on their own. Report-writing and CCTV answers, meanwhile, show who will keep good records, which matters when an incident is investigated later.
Who this test is for
Use it for static guards, mobile patrol officers, door and reception security, retail security, event stewards and control room operators. It works for in-house teams and contract security companies. Because it avoids country-specific legal powers, you can use the same pack across different sites and add your own legal questions where needed.
Make it yours
Add questions on your assignment instructions, radio call signs, alarm response procedures, search policy or the legal powers that apply where you operate. Contract companies can keep a core test and add a few site-specific questions for each client. The AI generator can draft more scenarios on a theme, such as lone working, for you to edit.
